Iberia passengers can now board with cell phones at Madrid airport

As of today, Iberia passengers flying from the T4 at Madrid airport can use their cell phones to download boarding card information and to board aircraft. The Spanish airline operates 600 flights daily to 120 destinations from Madrid.

This new service is available on all Iberia (except on the Madrid – Barcelona Shuttle flights) and Iberia Regional/Air Nostrum flights to Schengen destinations for passengers who don’t have any connecting flight.

Passengers can directly proceed to the aircraft, without a paper boarding pass, making passenger identification faster and more dynamic. At the same time, paper use for printing boarding passes is reduced.

The cell phone boarding card is based on a 2D (point-to-point) code and can be downloaded to cell phones and PDAs from www.iberia.com or www.iberia.mobi, 24 hours before the flight departure. The cell phone boarding card is valid in the whole airport: at the check-in counters, if luggage has to be checked- in, at the security control and at the gates to board the aircraft.

For passenger identification, it is necessary to put the cell phone or PDA near the cell phone boarding card scanner. After that, the passenger has to wait a couple of seconds until the identification is positive (acoustics / light signal).

Iberia has already implemented this service succesfully in Barcelona, Bilbao, Amsterdam, Düsseldorf and Stockholm. As of today, this service will also be available at Geneva airport in Switzerland and as of tomorrow at Prague airport, and the airline will gradually add it throughout its airport network as technical facilities become available.

Iberia is the first Spanish airline offering the cell phone boarding pass to its passengers.
